According to a new research published in "New Journal of Physics", there will soon be a new technological revolution in the field of screen displays. Researchers from Sony together with Max Planck Institute for the first time presented flexible optically assessed organic light emitting displays that work on red or IR-A light upconversion (UC).
Soon it will be possible to buy computers that can be folded and stored in a pocket. People will also have the opportunity to use newspaper display technology, which will allow uploading daily news to a handy display device.
There are several advantages that all organic upconversion displays have over traditional devices currently used for projection displays and televisions, and namely these multicolor UC displays are see-through and bendable. In addition, they use ultra low excitation intensity (red or infra-red) and they don't have speckles. These devices show fast response times and an almost unlimited viewing angle. They also represent multilayer displays and their size is limited only by the dimensions of the substrates
The announcement about OLED display screens came in 2006. However, due to the fact that the company faced several problems linked with the size, resolution and configuration of the organic compounds, Sony did not come to the market with the design of its gadget. The new technology developed for optically excited organic emissive displays is clear from this problem, which is why it provides opportunities for additional applications.
In conclusion the researchers stated: "To the best of our knowledge we demonstrate for the first time a versatile color all-organic and transparent UC-display. The reported displays are also flexible and have excellent brightness."
